Wisdom Without Regret

A friend recently shared a framed piece of art with these words on it:

Wisdom comes from good judgment.
Good judgment
comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgment.

I can relate. In my younger years, I learned most everything through the school of hard knocks. Given my experience, the framed saying felt true. Yet the more I sat with these words, the less satisfying they were. Yes, we can learn from our mistakes. But the path to wisdom doesn’t have to begin with bad judgment. Or always include stories of shame, loss, or regret.

Scripture promises we can bypass much of that drama and trauma if we’ll simply ask for wisdom.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.  (James 1:5-6 NLT)

We don’t have to learn everything the hard way or crash like unstable waves blown and tossed by the wind. When we place all our trust in God, he generously infuses us with wisdom that bypasses the baggage of bad judgment.

All we have to do is ask.
