Wildly Inefficient

The path to a beautiful creative act is often wildly inefficient and messy.

We grow impatient when we expect instant results. But an insistence on immediacy and efficiency gets in the way of the eternal. Being highly productive can get a lot done, but more isn't better if it leads to repetitive, formulaic, lukewarm creativity. That’s because art that transcends this moment doesn't happen on demand or according to our timetable.

Creating with God requires a willingness to slow down. It takes time to explore the deeper waters within and around us. The act of creation invites the artist to become good friends with patience, curiosity, and sleepless nights long before the art arrives.

Setting a pre-determined due date for when our ideas will be done and when the ideas are actually ready to be born aren't the same. With the first, we hit a deadline. With the second, we nurture the ideas with God until each is fully ready to be born.

It’s good to know the difference if we want to create art with an eternal spark.
