What’s Next, Papa?
Here’s how God describes his relationship to us: I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters. (2 Corinthians 6:18)
God creates. Then he fathers.
If he were a distant, remote, checked-out Creator, we might still be in awe. But it would be impossible to experience intimacy with him. The reason we can is because he also chooses to love us as a father loves his sons and daughters. Every part of our identity, including our creativity, flows from that love.
When we enter into our days together with God, we can know indescribable joy and peace. The expectancy of waking up each day wondering what our Father has for us is so much richer than striving to make our expectations happen. Paul describes it this way: This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. (Romans 8:15–16 MSG)
Though chaos tries to make us forget or doubt who we are, when we know God as Father, we know our true identity—sons and daughters who co-create with our dad.
