What Your Morning is Missing

For most of us, our early morning rituals leave us feeling empty. That’s because we start the day without God and then wonder where he went.

Here’s a simple way to change that. It’s by beginning the day with the practice of expectancy. When you first wake, stay in bed for a few minutes. Don’t reach for the phone on your nightstand or let the “to do” list steal your peace. Instead, give your first thoughts to God. Let him know you’re looking forward to spending the day together. That you’re expectant for his plans.

It works because it allows you a chance to find yourself in God before you get lost in the day. It’s amazing how tensions and worry decrease when you focus on God rather than the problems that await. This isn’t a time to demand answers or specific outcomes. It’s the ability to take things in without being taken out by them. The key is to simply remain expectant for what he is up to. This keeps your heart expectant rather than stuck in rigid expectations. There’s a world of difference in those two postures.

You must release the illusion of control as you step into mystery and unknown with God. This guarantees the unexpected. Once you believe anything can happen, you’re open to whatever God invites you into. Often these will be situations you couldn’t have imagined with outcomes only possible through him.
