The Way You Wake

How do you typically start your morning?

Do fears and worries of the day immediately rush at you? Or does your to-do list immediately demand your attention? Perhaps you tend to wake a mad-dash panic because you hit snooze three times and now you’re running late? Or maybe your first instinct is to reach for your distraction device (hello iPhone).

There’s a far better way to begin your day, one that ushers in calm, purpose, and union with God.

Before your feet hit the floor, invite God into your morning. Thank him for protecting you during the night watch. Let him know you love being his son or daughter. And ask him for any advance words he has for your day. Give him full permission to rearrange your calendar. Mainly, just orient yourself to him as you slowly breathe in and out. It’s amazing how tensions and worry decrease when you focus on God rather than potential problems or distractions.

This simple practice will change the trajectory of your day. Because now it isn’t you alone trying to make it all happen. It’s you and God experiencing every part of the day together.

And it gets even better. Because you can have that same peace at the end of your day. As you lay your head on the pillow, ask God for his interpretation of your day. You may think you’ve blown it. But ask God what he thinks. It’s his interpretation that’s true. Rest in that as you fall asleep.

The way you wake matters. Before you lose yourself in the day, find yourself in God.
