Six Essential Questions
In the last reading, I shared how keeping a journal with you at all times reveals a heart of expectancy. But I know it can be daunting to stare at a blank journal page, wondering where to begin. So here are six starter questions to help you grow in expectancy. I encourage you to write each question down in your journal. Then spend time listening to what God wants you to know.
God, what do You think of me?
You’ve given me a specific talent and passion, so why does it often feel like this dream will never become a reality?
What dreams for my future do I approach as though it is 100 percent up to me? How can I move from independence to full dependence on You for these desires?
Does my validation really come from You, God, or from how others respond (or don’t) to what I offer?
God, expose areas of my life where I still cling to control. Help me learn the art of letting go what I don’t control anyway.
This journey isn’t just about discovering your true identity. Ask God about his identity. You are who you are because God is first who he is. Get to know him. Not as an academic study but as you would a best friend. He is the most fascinating being ever. And you get to spend your life together.
Don’t rush through the questions. Spend a day or more in each. And remember, even though you are creative, the goal isn’t for you to create your own answers. It is just the opposite. Only write what God stirs in your soul. His answer may be a word, a sentence, or pages of insight. It may be playful, poetic or serious. Don’t try to filter or rewrite his words. Whatever God shares, capture it in the journal even if it doesn’t make immediate sense.
Enjoy your journal of expectancy. May it remind you that, like Mia, you’re on a journey of expectancy!
