Say Jesus

During Easter week, a major network morning show ran a faith segment featuring representatives from three different religions.

The conversation that followed was revealing…and disheartening.

When the Christian spokesperson answered questions, it became apparent that she was trying to talk about Easter without any mention of Jesus. Instead, she shared how the weekend was a time to focus on hope, inclusion, and positivity.

As the interview went on, something within my spirit began to rise. I said to her through the screen: Say Jesus. Do it. Say the name Jesus.

And she finally did. When asked about Good Friday. Once. Vaguely. Uncomfortably. And then moved on.

It’s not good when a person representing Christianity at Easter tries to side-step Jesus. But that’s the moment we’re in. Where one can talk about faith generically but must avoid the lightning rod of Jesus.

Perhaps that’s why Jesus so clearly reminds us of the danger of doing so:  If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38 NLT)
