Memory & Imagination

God gave us a memory and an imagination. When they work together according to his design, we see our story more clearly. When they don’t, we find ourselves stuck in the wrong story.

It’s essential to remember that our memory isn’t neutral. It wants to make sense of our story. To help, our imagination tries to fill in the blanks to determine why things happened the way they did and what that means for us.

But when we rely on our own limited understanding, we get (at best) partial insights. The process is often so painful, we just want to forget it rather than understand.

That’s because what’s missing is God’s interpretation of our story.

He’s the only one who sees the full panorama of what happened…and why. Only he grasps the extent of the enemy’s intent to steal, kill, and destroy us (John 10:10). Only Jesus can heal our broken hearts and set us free (Isaiah 61:1). And only God knows his plans for our future: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

Amazing things happen when we combine a God-healed memory of our past with a God-fueled imagination of the future.
