Know Your Audience
Is your current project more for yourself or for others?
The easy answer is everyone. But that’s kind of like saying your favorite jeans are for everyone. Nope, that pair is for you. If you’re making jeans for others, you have to consider what fits them best.
If you’re the audience for your project, then go ahead and use your favorite colors and customize every detail to your preference. Let the creation be therapeutic for your heart as you enter the playground of your imagination with God. If you’re cooking for one, make the dish as spicy or bland as your taste buds desire. If you’re going to hang the canvas in your living room, be as abstract as you like. If you’re a writer, journal as much as you want, knowing the words are for your eyes only.
But if you’re creating for others, your art must focus outward and address the needs of those with similar interests or questions. Yes, you are using your unique way of seeing life to create. But you need to consider the stories, colors, and pace that will be most helpful for them...even if you prefer a different speed or approach. Because what you’re designing isn’t for you but for others.
We do ourselves a disservice when we think the purpose of others is primarily to buy or praise our creations, to celebrate us. The end users aren’t a commodity for our creations. They are fellow travelers we have the honor of sharing ideas with.
