Hope Wins

We can’t place our hopes for better times on changing seasons or the promises of this world.

Jesus was clear that in this world, we will have sorrows, trials, and heartache.

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows…”  (John 16:33 NIV)

But he prefaces this hard news with some really good news. Jesus says his motive for telling us this is so we will have hope and peace. The kind that comes from him…not the world.

“I have told you all this so that you will have peace of heart and mind. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows; but cheer up, for I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)

And then he ends with the most reassuring statement of all. The reason we’re to stay hopeful is because Jesus has overcome the world. Think of it this way. Imagine there are two ship captains. The first says, “In this sea are icebergs but hey, try not to worry.” That captain reflects the ways of the world. Compare that to the other captain. He calmly says, “Don't worry. I’ve already overcome the entire sea.” That captain reflects the words of Jesus.

Jesus isn’t just hoping to overcome the entire world—he already has. That includes every obstacle and worry from our past, present, and future. Yes, we’ll still have trials. But with him, hope always wins.
