Hidden Since Eden

Why do you create? I’m not asking what you do…but why?

The disciples of Jesus asked him a similar question.

“Why do you tell stories?”

(Jesus) replied, “You’ve been given insight into God’s kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn’t been given to them. Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears. That’s why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward a welcome awakening.” (Matthew 13:10-13 MSG)

Jesus told stories in order to create readiness and nudge people toward a welcome awakening. Those were his primary motivations. Is that why you create?

Do your creations create readiness in those who experience them?

Does your art nudge people toward a welcome awakening?

Those are essential questions for anyone wanting their art to contain an eternal spark.

That would be enough, yet there’s more. Because in this same setting, Jesus reveals a jaw-dropping insight into how his stories serve as beacons to Eden.

All Jesus did that day was tell stories—a long storytelling afternoon. His storytelling fulfilled the prophecy:

I will open my mouth and tell stories;
I will bring out into the open things hidden since the world’s first day.
(Matthew 13:34-35 MSG)

Through story, Jesus opened his mouth to bring into the open what was lost, stolen, or forgotten since creation.

Imagine that. Your creations have the potential to bring into the open things hidden from the time of Eden. But only if you search for them, through your gifting, with the Creator.
