Don’t Wait for Guarantees

When we refuse to take risks with God because we don’t fully trust him, we may think we’re playing it safe. We’re actually just trusting our fears and doubts more than we trust God. We’re longing for a life of guaranteed results where no faith is needed.

Staying on the sidelines until one has 100% certainty may seem rational at first blush. Except that we don’t abide by that standard on practically any other front. We fully trust the pilot we’ve never met to get our plane to its destination. We completely trust an anonymous chef who prepared our food to do so safely. We absolutely trust our body to continue breathing once we go to sleep.

As long as we withhold trust and refuse to risk without an upfront guarantee from God, we aren’t ready for a life with God. Because faith is essential as God invites us to follow him into the unknown…where the only guarantee is that he’ll be with us. Faith isn’t needed at the victory party after the battle’s been fought and the victory won…but in the middle of the “not yet.” And friends, that is where we live our days…in the middle of the “not yet.”

We’ll never have 100% proof of anything before it happens…but we can be fully confident God will be with us in everything we face. He wants to be our only plan—not our back-up or rescue plan. Our life becomes exponentially more interesting when we live this way. So does our art. The more expansive our faith becomes, the larger the canvas we can create upon.
