Desert Submarine
Your desert is made up of the things that derail or defeat you. It is in this stripped away place that our identity either disintegrates or is forged anew.
What is the dry and dusty place you’re stuck in? To answer that, think of where you go when you feel lost, parched, and isolated. There’s the Desert of Regret. Or perhaps the Desert of Striving, which begins with the subtle agreement that life is up to you. Maybe it’s the Desert of the Overwhelmed, where there never seems to be enough time and you live from a place of scarcity. There are as many deserts as there are people. Some of us have multiple deserts.
The first step is to know and to name your main desert. Take a moment to do so now.
The next step is to realize you can’t set yourself free…by yourself. Your parched and weary soul needs to be filled with God’s living water. And the only way to experience that is to invite God into the source of your pain. But how does this happen when you feel alone in your desert? Good question.
God wants to heal the very areas you named. To do so, he invites you to join him on a journey of deep healing. But doing so requires you to go beneath the surface—which is where the desert submarine comes in. It’s a creative way to picture what’s really going on as God takes you below the sandy surface to his river of life. Only his living water can quench your thirst and fill your emptiness. Let the waves of grace and mercy wash over you and drink in his love. As you do, you’ll find freedom from the enemy’s lies and the scars of your story.
Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water shall flow from the inmost being of anyone who believes in me.” (John 7:37-38 TLB)
Once you’ve been replenished, rise back to the surface…where your life, your words, and your creativity can invite other desert wanderers to experience God’s living water.
