Customers or Kindred Spirits?

Creative people love to create. But most don’t particularly like marketing what they’ve created.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Everything changes when you change your perspective. Your message isn’t “buy my stuff” but “join me on this journey.” This isn’t putting a positive spin on marketing. It’s a truer way to step into the process.

You are on a journey and your creations are a reflection of that. Those with similar questions, interests, passions, or problems aren’t primarily customers. They are kindred spirits. You’re just a little further in your exploration of a topic than they are. Your art is an invitation for them to join you on that journey.

Whatever you’re creating, there are others who are interested in it. The best way to begin is to become an active friend in (or of) that community. Build a genuine relationship with them over time. Spend more time pouring into the community than asking them to pour into you.

You’ll be amazed at the radical difference it makes when you do.
